NO ID kicked off the event, but the venue was still relatively empty throughout their set. Throughout the event, the chandelier/disco ball creation moved and morphed colors, and I think it captivated every single person in the crowd. A large, glowing chandelier hung from the ceiling for Cosmic Opera, with the most amazing disco ball I’ve ever seen placed in its center. One night at Hammerstein pretty much guarantees that you’ll never want to attend another show at the disastrous shithole otherwise known as Roseland Ballroom again. Hammerstein is a classic, old, and beautiful theater, with a spacious open floor plan, tiered semi-circular balconies above, and a soaring, domed ceiling. I hadn’t been to Hammerstein since Ti ësto’s epic Kaleidoscope World Tour several years ago, and I’d been dying to see another house show there. For those who haven’t been to Hammerstein, it is undoubtedly one of NYC’s best concert venues.

I Can Give You House attended Cosmic Opera’s Friday night showing at Hammerstein Ballroom. I’d basically characterize it as a house music Cirque de Soleil - with an emphasis on the house music, and a lot less of the theatrical performance aspect that I originally thought was going to be the main focus of the show.

And while Act I of Cosmic Opera didn’t end up being as “extrasensory” or as “operatic” as I’d hoped, the event certainly didn’t disappoint. Since the announcement of “ Cosmic Opera” in early January - something billed as a mysterious “extrasensory dance event series” - the majority of the New York City EDM community, including myself, waited impatiently to see what headliner Axwell and creator Justin Cohen had in store for us.
